Nāda Yoga is the ancient yogic path that uses sound as a gateway to meditation and inner awakening. The Sanskrit word Nāda means vibration or inner sound. Yogic sages believed that the entire universe arises from vibration, and through sound we can reconnect with the deeper rhythm of existence.
Outer Sound and Inner Sound
Nāda Yoga works with two dimensions of sound:
- Āhata Nāda (Struck Sound)
External sounds such as chanting, mantra, music, or singing bowls.
- Anāhata Nāda (Unstruck Sound)
The subtle inner vibration perceived in deep meditation. The practice begins with listening to external sound and gradually leads to awareness of inner vibration.
The Power of Mantra
Mantra chanting is one of the most powerful tools within Nāda Yoga. Sacred syllables such as Om carry vibrational qualities that influence both the nervous system and the subtle energy body. Chanting creates resonance within the body, calming the mind and deepening meditation.
Listening as Meditation
In Nāda Yoga, listening itself becomes meditation. Rather than controlling the mind, the practitioner simply rests attention on sound. Over time, this attentive listening quiets mental activity and reveals a profound sense of stillness.

Returning to the Sound of Silence
Ultimately, Nāda Yoga guides the practitioner toward the most subtle sound of all—the inner silence that exists beyond vibration. In that silence, the mind dissolves and awareness rests in its natural state.
